Mentor a Youth Today

You can change the life of a child today simply by taking him or her outside to hike, bike, camp or paddle. Introducing an individual to outdoor recreation at a young age is key to instilling a lifelong love of the outdoors and ensuring a healthy, more active lifestyle.

Outdoor Industry Foundation research indicates that 90% of current active adults were introduced to outdoor recreation between the ages of 5 and 18. Research also shows that parents, friends and family have the greatest influence over getting youth started in an outdoor activity.

Americans are getting heavier and increasingly less active. This trend spans all demographics and is a particularly troubling sign for the youth of today. Reduction in physical fitness is the largest culprit behind a 10% increase in childhood obesity. While the statistics may sound grim, most health experts agree that a healthy, active lifestyle is the best prescription for preventing obesity and other health related problem. Active outdoor recreation provides a fun and affordable opportunity for you and your family to achieve this goal.

Outdoor Industry Foundation is aiming to double particiaption in outdoor recreation within 15 years. We call on every person in the industry to make it a personal goal to introduce at least one youth to the joys of the active outdoor lifestyle. Take a kid hiking, biking, or fishing. Show a teenager how to top rope, teach your neice or nephew how to canoe. Keep the chain of influence strong by mentoring a youth in an activity that you are passionate about.

Celebrate National Trails Day

On Saturday, June 4th, 2005 thousands of outdoor enthusiasts will gather at events around the country in celebration of National Trails Day (NTD). The first Saturday of every June has been designated as NTD to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of our nation’s trails and to provide an opportunity for Americans to thank the many volunteers, outdoor businesses, land management agencies, and local hiking clubs for their stewardship of our land.

NTD events can take many forms including hikes, gear demonstrations, nature walks, trail projects, trail dedications and instructional workshops. To locate an event in your area, or find out how you can host your own event, visit American Hiking Society.

NTD provides a great opportunity to introduce a new participant to trails. Share your love of the outdoors by taking a youth out to hike, bike, camp or paddle on National Trails Day. By doing so, you will help foster a love of trails and the outdoors in the next generation. Those who love the outdoors are more apt to use it and care for it.

OIA Topline Report: Aspiration to Inspiration Still Holds True

Social and lifestyle trends are creating a shift in why Americans hike and camp and these motivations are having an impact on what and where they buy. The shift from goal-driven motives (to conquer a mountain, climb shear faces or endure extreme conditions) to consumers wanting to find peace of mind, have fun, get closer to their roots, and escape the stresses in their lives remains an overarching reason to recreate in the out of doors. This has been consistent since 9/11. Women, who are playing a larger part in the outdoor retail picture are prone to look to the outdoors for inspiration, relaxation, entertainment and connection to their friends, family and the greater world.
