Sustainability Overview

ECO WORKING GROUP

The Eco Working Group (EWG) was formed by OIA in 2007 to explore the issues of environmental sustainability as related to the outdoor industry.   The OIA Eco Working Group consists of over 140 individuals from over 80 outdoor businesses collaborating to develop the industry's first environmental assessment tool or "Eco Index."  The index will contain environmental guidelines, environmental performance metrics and a comparative scoring system.

The working group has an open membership, encouraging participation from all companies throughout the supply chain; however in order to have 'voting' rights a company must pay an annual participation fee. Dues are levied on a sliding scale based upon corporate revenue and OIA membership. For more information and to download a brochure and voting membership form, click here.

  • Eco Index Framework: The EWG has developed an overarching Eco Index Framework (version 2.6, as of 1/21/09) (download by clicking here).
  • Packaging Guidelines: EWG approved, by unanimous vote, the first set of Eco Index Guidelines – the Outdoor Industry Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (download by clicking here).
