About the Eco Working Group

The OIA Eco Working Group (EWG) was formed in 2007 to explore the issues of environmental sustainability as related to the outdoor industry. The EWG consists of more than 100 outdoor businesses whose first accomplishment was collaboratively developing the industry's first environmental assessment tool: the Eco Index.  The second version of the Eco Index, the Apparel Tool, has now been developed in conjunction with the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and is being pilot tested through January 2012.

The following Eco Index / Apparel Tool subgroups are currently running:

  • Footwear
  • Equipment
  • Chemicals Management
  • Social Responsibility / Fair Labor
  • Systems
The Eco Working Group has also developed a new working group to address traceability issues within various materials supply chains.  The group is co-chaired by Anne Gillespie of Textile Exchange and Steve Richardson of Patagonia and its first material-specific taskforce will focus on goose down.

The EWG has an open membership, encouraging participation from all companies throughout the supply chain.

EWG voting member companies pay an annual participation fee. Fees are based on a sliding scale based upon corporate revenue and OIA membership.
